PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION? SLIGHT CORRECTION:

"Progress not perfection" is quite the buzz phrase these days. A lot of people find it useful, and that’s a good thing.

For some of us, it sounds like we’re being asked to settle, to lower our expectations of ourselves, and this can backfire. Why bother if we can’t achieve what we're after? Why make the effort for some piddly little progress that feels like nothing?  What does it mean to practice "progress not perfection"?

The missing link here is in how to be purposeful with our progress.

Progress in and of itself isn’t that valuable when it’s random.

Making any kind of thoughtless progress is like swiping around in the dark.

Purposeful progress is like dropping your change in the “vacation” jar at the end of each day. Keep dropping your change, and eventually you'll be ready for your vacation. If you have a big-feeling, overwhelming, but all-meaningful goal, make a jar for it, whether a literal jar, a progress chart, or simply have it in your mind. Treat your time and energy like change in a jar.

Even better, consider it like investing in an interest-building account. It will compound over time.

Are you trying to write a book? How much can you spare today? Five minutes, or 30? A paragraph or a page? Drop it in the jar.

If you want to find a new job, or pursue a new career, drop a few minutes in the “search” jar today, tomorrow, and each day to follow. Spend a few minutes googling around, or set a timer and brainstorm ideas, bad ones. You need the bad ones to get to the good ones. Schedule specific time to focus on it. It doesn't matter how little. It adds up. If you're trying to clear out your clutter, think of every item OUT as money in the bank! ...your mental bank of sanity and calm. Five boxes emptied, 500 bucks in the bank! 5,000, 50,000, 500,000, whatever it's worth to you!

Perfectionism, or as I call it, “all-or-nothing-ism,” is a crap shoot that usually gets you crap.

Purposeful progress is an investment that compounds over time.

People spend years or decades trying to do the big things, when had they been doing the little things all along, they would be enjoying the big results. Do the little things. Put the change in the jar. Watch it all add up.
